The HBO series Game of Thrones is known for terrifying dragons, gory deaths, and of course, beautiful backdrops. Many of those scenic shots are actual places instead of just filming in front of a green screen! A huge reason I visited many of the places that I did in Spain, was to see some of those filming locations.

*Spoilers ahead!*

Game of Thrones Filming Locations in Girona, Spain

Girona, Spain is a short train ride away from Barcelona. The city is beautiful on its own, but Game of Thrones fans will recognize two different filming locations: Braavos and King’s Landing.

The most distinguished filming location of the two is located at the Girona Cathedral. The front doorway and the stairs leading to it were part of the famous “shaming” scene, as well as when Jaime Lannister rode his horse over the steps of the cathedral to confront the faith of the seven, and rescue Margaery.

The scenes of Arya’s training and blind punishment in Braavos are also filmed in Girona. The city is full of winding, cobbled alleyways in which Arya was seen begging, and running to escape the Waif.

Although I chose to explore Girona on my own, there are multiple Game of Thrones filming tours that run through the city that will show you each individual filming spot. Check out available tours here!

Game of Thrones Filming Locations in Barcelona, Spain

Castell de Santa Florentina, located just northeast of Old Town Barcelona, was used as the filming location of House Tarly. The castle can be seen in season 6 when Samwell Tarly introduces Gilly to his family. Although only seen briefly, this location can easily be admired as a day trip from Barcelona or Girona!

I did not have the opportunity to visit this location, but the castle looks beautiful and easy to reach from Barcelona or Girona!

Game of Thrones Filming Locations in Córdoba, Spain

Similar to Barcelona, the city of Córdoba was briefly used to film a castle for the show. Who’s castle? The ancestral home of House Tyrell! The castle here was used in filming the scene when Jaime Lannister conquers House Tyrell, and Olenna admits to being the one who poisoned Joffrey on his wedding day.

Game of Thrones Filming Locations in Seville, Spain

Seville is my favorite city in all of Spain, and it just so happens to be another filming location for Game of Thrones! Inside Real Alcázar de Sevilla, visitors can recognize scenes from Dorne in the show. The massive palace and surrounding gardens were used to shoot the Water Gardens, Sunspear, and Seat of House Martell in Dorne.

The large bullfighting ring in Seville is the filming location for the slavers fighting ring in Meereen. This is also where Drogon rescued Daenarys during the coup in the city. Likewise, the Roman amphitheater just outside of Seville was briefly used as a filming point for the beginning of season 7.

There are a few other minor Spain filming locations, but they were so brief that only the most hardcore fans would appreciate them. If interested, here’s a great article that lists every tiny filming location in Spain!

What’s your favorite scene filmed at these locations? Let me know!
