Snorkeling is one of my favorite things to do while in a tropical setting. Getting to see an entirely new ecosystem under the water is like observing a completely new world! The sea life, corals, and the way everything seems to move in synchrony is mesmerizing. Snorkeling the Belize Barrier Reef was an incredible experience everyone should have!

Corals stretching for miles

I visited the Belize Barrier Reef in the summer of 2017 during my trip with EF Ultimate Break. Although it was not quite what I had expected going in, it was well worth the sunburn I got! My expectation of huge amounts of sea creatures floating below me was not entirely met. However, I did not expect to fall in love with the colors of the corals and small fish the way I did.

The colors of the corals were so vivid, even amidst the blue hue of the water. The fish were colorful as well and flitted playfully as I swam overhead. Others I traveled with saw sea turtles and manta rays swimming amongst the corals. While I was not so lucky within my own snorkel group, I still saw a large number of sea life, including a school of barracuda, a nurse shark, sea urchin, sea cucumber, and a large number of various fish.

The Belize Barrier Reef is the second largest barrier reef in the world to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, and the largest intact reef in the northern hemisphere. It is also an UNESCO World Heritage Site, made up of 7 fully protected areas of reefs, mangroves, and the Blue Hole Natural Monument.

Why you Should Visit the Belize Barrier Reef

The Belize Barrier Reef offers some of the world’s best snorkeling and diving through the reefs, as well as stunning views above water around the beaches and mangroves. Visiting this site with an environmentally conscious guide or group will ensure that visitors do not damage the pristine ecosystem. Our snorkel guide even helped point out animals that we would never have seen on our own!

My favorite animal I found in the reef…a sea urchin!

Belize itself is an absolutely beautiful country, and its reef should find its way on your bucket list!
