COVID-19 is still rampant in 2021, especially in the United States. However, the CDC has stated that if people remain at least 6 feet (2m) away from each other and wear cloth face coverings or masks, the risk for contracting Coronavirus is reduced dramatically. While it is not safe to visit theme parks, the mall, or the movie theater if you are unvaccinated, there are a number of social distancing travel ideas for this summer. Here are some ideas for you to keep active, have fun, and stay as safe as possible!
Go for a Hike or Bike Ride
Hiking and visiting your local state or national park is a great way to explore your local area! There are probably a dozen or so state parks within driving distance from your home for a quick day trip that you’ve never visited. Now’s the time! Pack a lunch, find a trail, and enjoy some fresh air.
Face masks aren’t necessarily needed for hiking, especially in an area with little foot traffic. I recommend having a mask in your pocket in case you come across a group of people that you cannot avoid. I recommend finding a secluded area and pick a local park that is less popular to avoid seeing crowds of people.
Visit a Local Zoo
Visiting a local outdoor zoo is an excellent social distancing travel idea! Zoos are always in dire need of funds from visitors and are almost always mostly outside. Many zoos around the US are open for visitors and are restricting the number of people allowed inside the park per day.
You can enjoy seeing the animals with minimal risk as long as you wear your face mask and social distance from other visitors. Be sure to carry plenty of hand sanitizer, keep at least 6 ft (2m) away from other visitors, and respect restrictions put in place by the park. If the zoo has not closed indoor exhibits, consider skipping them. Be sure to double-check your local zoo’s website for their restrictions, as well as to reserve tickets in advance!
Visit a Secluded Beach, Lake, or River
Summer is definitely more enjoyable in the water! It is completely possible for visitors to practice social distancing in these areas. However, densely populated or frequently visited sites will be much more difficult to stay safe in.
While on land and in water, be sure to stay at least 6 ft (2m) away from others. Keep a mask nearby and plenty of hand sanitizer to use if you need to use a communal surface such as a picnic table or outdoor shower. There is no evidence that COVID-19 spreads through water, so go ahead and go for a swim!
Rent an RV or Boat
Renting an RV or boat with an area to sleep is a great way to get out of the house but still socially distance from other travelers! This will keep you away from hotels and public bathrooms more as well. Pack your own groceries and have picnics on the road or water! Just be careful to stay at least 6 ft (2m) away from others if you need to dock your boat or stay in an RV park.
Stay Home!
The best way to make sure you are social distancing is to “travel” from home! Check out my article on how to inspire wanderlust and live like a traveler from home in order to stay safe.
Where NOT to Travel: Where Social Distancing Travel is Not Possible
I highly encourage you to not travel outside of state lines or travel via an airline if possible to prevent the further spread of COVID-19. Airlines have now stopped social distancing on flights, making the possibility of spreading the virus that much higher. Some states are even implementing a mandatory 14-day quarantine if you are arriving from another US state. Be sure to check for this before you book your trip.
Avoid crowded parks and beaches, as well as public restrooms and indoor areas for stops as much as possible. Do not visit theme parks, even if they are reopening. The number of contact surfaces where the virus can spread in theme parks is insane! Think of how many surfaces you touch while visiting Disney World: on rides, in restaurants, and even waiting in line. There’s just no way they can sanitize every single surface between every single guest!
Tips on Staying Safe with Social Distancing Travel
Wash your hands frequently and use face masks and hand sanitizer with an alcohol content of AT LEAST 60%. Socially distance while visiting friends and family who do not live with you.
I understand that this summer is definitely more of a drag than usual. However, these guidelines will help save lives! You can still enjoy your summer and visit local areas you may have never experienced before!

This is great information! We’ve been able to get out and do some socially-distanced camping this summer.
That’s awesome! I’m in Florida right now, so it’s a TAD too hot down here for camping. Hopefully we’ll be able to go once it cools down this fall!
