Previously, I posted an article where I asked multiple full-time travel bloggers about the best and worst hostel experiences they have had. At the time, I had not visited Ecuador yet. However, while there, I found a hostel that really changed my life, and brought so much joy to myself and my partner! The hostel? Hosteria Rose Cottage in Otavalo, Ecuador.
What Makes Rose Cottage Special
Rose Cottage immediately stood out to me upon arrival. After a long and crazy bus ride from Baños, we arrived exhausted and ready for some relaxation. Of course, you never really know how relaxing a hostel will be until after you arrive. Walking to my building, the view of the city below me took my breath away.
In the morning, we were treated to breakfast with some of the freshest eggs I have ever eaten, freshly squeezed juice, and the most delicious French-press coffee in the world. I still have dreams about that coffee! The dining area had full windows on each wall, offering stunning views of a volcano on one side, a snow-peaked mountain on the other, farmland surrounding us, and the city below.
The hotel itself is a small farm. Their beloved llama, Prince Charming, grumpily greeted us as he munched on the grass. A horse, sheep, and donkey also greeted us and accepted head pats and fresh grass. The humans at Rose Cottage are incredible too! Although they speak next to no English, their friendliness and helpfulness poured out of them. Honestly, the owners of this hostel are some of the nicest, purest people I have ever met anywhere in the world.
The majority of the rooms are fairly basic, but not in a bad way. Comfortable beds, decent showers, and a quiet atmosphere are all I really want in a place where I won’t be spending much time in my actual room. However, Rose Cottage also has a few cabins that are set up like the ever so popular tiny houses on Instagram. They definitely have the best views of any room, and they’re super cute!
What to do Nearby
Although the hostel sits just outside (and above) Otavalo, taxis cost only a few dollars to get to town. The hostel owners will even drive you to the Otavalo market for free every Saturday! This market is the largest outdoor market in all of South America, and should not be missed!
Other than shopping, Otavalo has some incredible food and hiking to offer. The city is surprisingly laid back and can be easily navigated. I highly recommend stopping in one of the many family-owned restaurants for a meal you will remember forever!
Hiking around Otavalo is beautiful as well. I visited both Laguna Cuicocha (Cuicocha Lake) and the Cascadas de Peguche (Peguche Waterfalls). Both offer stunning views and a chance to pull out your hiking boots. Cuicocha is an all-day intensive hike, so be prepared!
What to do at Rose Cottage
Rose Cottage itself has dozens of activities if you wish to stay nearby. Horseback riding, tennis and basketball courts, climbing equipment, and a jacuzzi are just a few of the activities available steps from your hostel room. Or, if you just want a relaxing visit, laying in one of many hammocks with a good book and a stunning view is always an option as well!
I truly believe that the views from this hostel speak for themselves. However, I cannot emphasize enough how incredibly wonderful the staff and family are at this hostel. Our two-day visit turned into almost a week, and we were welcomed like family every time we passed a friendly face! I cannot recommend this hostel enough, and Otavalo was a surprisingly fun city as well!
