I love destinations that allow me to admire local wildlife! And since you’re reading this, you probably do too. Wildlife is, quite honestly, one of the main things that draw me to a destination. Here are 5 of the best wildlife destinations in the United States that you need to add to your list.
Myakka River State Park, Florida
Living in Sarasota definitely had its perks: warm winters, sunny beaches, and one of the best wildlife reserves in the state. Myakka River State Park is an absolute must to see all the wildlife Florida has to offer. Even if you’re not a big hiker, lookout points and boat tours will guarantee you a look at Florida’s most famous animal: the American alligator.
This park is easily accessible by car, bike, and has dozens of hiking trails so anyone can visit!
Gatlinburg, Tennessee
Gatlinburg is a sweet little mountain town located right outside the impressive Smoky Mountain National Forest. It’s perfectly situated between the more touristy Pigeon Forge and the National Forest, so you have an endless number of activities to do. It’s not unusual to see deer or even black bears walking around your cabin in the mornings or in the forest during the day!
Snake Road, Illinois
Snake Road is the nickname given to LaRue Road in LaRue, Illinois on the outskirts of Shawnee National Forest. The road itself is pretty unimpressive: a simple paved hiking trail that runs about a mile and a half end to end. However, twice a year it is the location of the country’s largest reptile migration! Visitors can see hundreds of snakes, turtles, frogs, and migratory birds on this little unassuming road. Visit between March 15 to May 15 and September 1 to October 30 for the best chance to see wildlife.
Olympic National Park, Washington State
Washington State is one of my favorite places in the country to spot wildlife. The state seems to be overflowing with native wildlife, and it changes every season so you’ll always see something different! The Olympic National Park actually has three distinct ecosystems supporting wildlife such as fish, bears, migratory birds, deer, rabbits and hares, and elk. My favorite is spotting impressive bald eagles while hiking the trails.
Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, Montana, & Idaho
Although I have not visited yet, this list would not be complete without adding Yellowstone. The park is massive and is the first-ever national park created in the world! In addition to its unique hydrothermal geysers, springs, and mud pits, Yellowstone is home to over 67 mammal species. These include American Bison, coyotes, elk, buffalo, grey wolves, and two species of bear. I’m astonished I haven’t visited yet!
